On scale curves for nonparametric description of dispersion

چکیده
A two-dimensional visual device for description of the dispersion of a multivariate data set in any dimension is the scale curve, a depth-based method introduced by Liu (1990) and treated in detail by Liu, Parelius and Singh (1999). It offers an appealing alternative to covariance matrix methods and even provides an attractive new tool in the univariate case. To support applications such as uniform confidence bounds for the population scale curve, we develop some asymptotics. Uniform strong convergence of the sample scale curve is established under broad conditions and uniform weak convergence under somewhat restricted conditions. Open issues for further investigation are discussed.

Joint inversion of ReMi dispersion curves and refraction travel times using particle swarm optimization algorithm
Shear-wave velocity ( ) is an important parameter used for site characterization in geotechnical engineering. However, dispersion curve inversion is challenging for most inversion methods due to its high non-linearity and mix-determined trait. In order to overcome these problems, in this study, a joint inversion strategy is proposed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The ...
متن کاملIncreasing the discrimination power the decision making units based on reducing dispersion of weights in the data envelopment analysis
Data envelopment analysis which is a nonparametric technique for evaluating relative efficiency of the decision making units with multiple inputs and outputs, has been a very popular method among researchers. While this nonparametric technique is popular, it has some drawbacks such as lack of discrimination in efficient units and weights dispersion .The present study, which is a model based on ...
متن کاملNonparametric Multivariate Kurtosis and Tailweight Measures
For nonparametric exploration or description of a distribution, the treatment of location, spread, symmetry and skewness is followed by characterization of kurtosis. Classical momentbased kurtosis measures the dispersion of a distribution about its “shoulders”. Here we consider quantile-based kurtosis measures. These are robust, are defined more widely, and discriminate better among shapes. A u...
متن کاملNonparametric Multivariate Descriptive Measures Based on Spatial Quantiles
An appealing way of working with probability distributions, especially in nonparametric inference, is through “descriptive measures” that characterize features of particular interest. One attractive approach is to base the measures on quantiles. Here we consider the multivariate context and utilize the “spatial quantiles”, a recent vector extension of univariate quantiles that is becoming incre...
متن کاملEstimating IDF based on daily precipitation using temporal scale model
The intensity –duration –frequency (IDF) curves play most important role in watershed management, flood control and hydraulic design of structures. Conventional method for calculating the IDF curves needs hourly rainfall data in different durations which is not extensively available in many regions. Instead 24-hour precipitation statistics were measured in most rain-gauge stations. In this stud...
